Saturday 18 April 2026 marked a special milestone for the Caribbean community in Sydney, the very first Sydney Caribbean Connection – Picnic and Lime held at Parramatta Park.
The event brought together families, friends, and new faces for a relaxed and vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture. And what a day it was.
A True Taste of Caribbean Community in Sydney
From the moment you arrived, there was a feeling you could not miss: warmth; laughter; and connection.
This was more than just a picnic. It was a space where:
- cultures were proudly represented
- stories were shared
- friendships were formed
- and community spirit came alive.
Whether you came to lime, play a game of dominoes, fly a kite, or simply relax on a picnic blanket, there was something for everyone.
Behind the Scenes: A Small Team, Big Vision
The idea for the Caribbean Picnic and Lime began with Tekeisha, who shared her vision last year. And as we say in the Caribbean, we do not just talk, we act. This year, that vision became reality.
A small but dedicated team brought the event together:
- David Merritt
- Fariet Sheotahul
- Hope Kidd
- Rhiana Maxwell
- Tekeisha Ford
Together, we created the foundation for what is now the Caribbean Connection, an initiative focused on:
- strengthening community ties
- celebrating Caribbean heritage
- creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for all generations.
Lessons Learned (Yes… We Needed a Speaker!)
I was scheduled to deliver the welcome address, paper in hand and ready to go. But sometimes reality teaches you quickly.
Without a loudspeaker, it became clear that the message would not carry far enough. So, the speech stayed on the page, a quiet reminder that as we grow, so must our planning.
Lesson for next time: a proper sound system is essential.
And that is exactly what debrief sessions are for: learning; improving; and coming back stronger.
The Welcome Message (As Intended)
Although it was not delivered on the day, the message still reflects the heart of the event.
There was Welcome to Country, then “Welcome, welcome, welcome to our Caribbean Picnic and Lime…the first of what we hope will be many gatherings under our Sydney Caribbean Connection. If today nice, you know we coming back stronger next time!”
At its core, the message was simple: community, culture, and connection.
Looking Ahead: This Is Just the Beginning
The Caribbean Picnic and Lime was never meant to be a one-off event. It is the beginning of something bigger.
As we continue to build the Caribbean Connection, there will be more opportunities to:
- gather and celebrate
- share our cultures and traditions
- support one another as a community
- create lasting memories for future generations.
